Short Runs, Real Books, No Minimums

Most large-scale print-on-demand platforms are optimized for high volume. Order 10 copies of your self-published novel from an online broker and you’re paying per-copy prices that assume you’ll sell at full retail — plus shipping that arrives in two weeks and can’t be inspected until after delivery.

At Rocky Heights in Homewood, we print books locally in small and standard quantities. If you need 25 copies of a memoir for family, 50 copies of a church directory, 100 copies of a training manual, or 500 copies of a trade paperback for a regional launch, the process is the same: you bring your files, we proof the job, we produce it to spec, and you pick it up — or we ship it.

We’ve printed books for first-time authors who had never formatted a manuscript, and for experienced publishers with print-ready files. Either way, every job gets a preflight review before anything goes to press. Spine width, bleed, margin safety, ISBN barcode placement — we catch problems before they become printed problems.

How Book Printing Works

  1. 1

    Specify Your Book

Tell us your trim size (5×8", 6×9", 8.5×11", or custom), page count, interior color (black-and-white or full color), cover finish (matte or gloss lamination), and binding type. If you're not sure, we'll walk through the options with you based on your use case, quantity, and budget.

  2. 2

    Submit and Preflight Your Files

Send your print-ready interior PDF and cover file. We review every submission for spine width accuracy, bleed on the cover, margin safety for the gutter, resolution (300 DPI minimum), and color mode. If you're self-publishing and need your ISBN barcode placed or your cover built to the exact spine calculation, our design team can handle that.

  3. 3

    Print, Bind, and Pick Up

Once files are approved, your job moves to production. Interiors are printed, covers are finished (laminated or coated), and the book is bound and trimmed to spec. Quality is checked before release. Local customers pick up at our Homewood shop; shipping is available for customers outside the metro area. Standard turnaround is 5–7 business days for most book formats.

Frequently Asked Questions

What trim sizes do you offer for custom book printing?
We print in standard trade sizes — 5×8", 5.5×8.5", 6×9", and 8.5×11" — as well as custom dimensions. If you're working with a non-standard trim size, contact us before submitting files so we can confirm setup requirements and provide the correct bleed specs.
What is the minimum order quantity for short-run book printing?
We don't require large minimums. We can print as few as one copy for proofing and handle small runs of 10–50 copies just as readily as standard runs of 100, 250, or 500. Per-unit cost decreases with quantity, but short runs are not turned away.
What is the difference between hardcover and perfect-bound paperback?
Hardcover (case binding) uses rigid board covers wrapped in cloth or printed paper — significantly more durable, higher perceived value, common for gift books and reference editions. Perfect binding uses a flexible cover glued to a squared spine — the standard trade paperback format, lighter and lower cost, appropriate for most self-published fiction and non-fiction.
Do you help with ISBN barcode placement and cover file setup?
Yes. Spine width is calculated from page count and paper stock — we provide the exact measurement once specs are confirmed. Our design team can place your ISBN barcode and build a print-ready cover file if needed. This is especially useful for first-time authors who haven't formatted a cover before.
Can you print books with full-color interiors?
Yes. We print both black-and-white and full-color interiors. Full-color is priced per page and adds cost at higher page counts, so it's most practical for children's books, art books, photo books, and illustrated guides. For novels and text-heavy non-fiction, black-and-white interior printing is standard.
