Spiral & Coil Binding in Birmingham, AL

Documents that open flat, fold back on themselves, and stay where you put them — no hands required.

Built for Documents That Get Used

Spiral and coil binding serve a specific reader: someone who sets a document flat on a desk, photocopies a page from it mid-use, or folds it back on itself in the field. For training manuals, recipe books, course workbooks, architectural drawings, and event run-of-shows, a document that won't stay open on its own is a document that frustrates the people using it.

Saddle-stitch staples and perfect binding both leave a spine that resists lying fully flat. Coil and wire-o binding solve that entirely — pages open to a full 360 degrees, stay where you put them, and don't spring shut when you let go. That single property changes how usable a working document actually is.

At Rocky Heights, we offer both plastic coil and wire-o (double-loop wire) in short-edge and long-edge orientations to match how your document will actually be read. Standard coil is black, but we carry a range of custom colors; wire-o comes in pewter standard with additional options available. Cover stock can go up to 130# glossy — the heaviest we carry for any binding type — for a durable, professional front and back.

How Spiral & Coil Binding Works

  1. 1

Stock Selection & Coil Gauge Matching

The coil or wire diameter needs to match your document thickness — too small and the pages bind tight; too large and the coil sits loose. We determine the right gauge from your page count and stock choice. If you want a custom coil color or a specific cover weight, we confirm availability and material before anything goes to press.

  2. 2

    Printing & Precision Hole Punching

Interior pages are printed on your chosen stock — from standard 24# text to 100# glossy — in black and white or full color, single or double-sided. Once printed, pages are punched in a uniform pattern along the binding edge. Coil and wire-o use different hole pitches, so the punching setup is matched to your chosen binding type.

  3. 3

    Coil Threading & Crimping

For coil binding, the plastic spiral is threaded through the punched holes and crimped at both ends to hold it in place. For wire-o, the double-loop wire is inserted and then closed using a wire-closing machine that presses the loops into a uniform rounded shape. Either way, the finished document opens flat and holds up to repeated, heavy use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between coil binding and wire-o binding?
Coil binding uses a single continuous plastic spiral threaded through punched holes; wire-o uses a double-loop metal wire. Both allow pages to open flat or fold back 360°. Wire-o has a stiffer, more executive look and feel; coil is more flexible and available in more colors. For permanent reference materials or executive presentations, wire-o is often the preferred choice. For course workbooks and everyday training manuals, coil is a practical and durable option.
What cover stock is available for spiral-bound documents?
We offer 130# glossy cover for coil- and wire-bound projects — the heaviest cover stock we carry for any binding type, producing a durable, professional front and back. We also carry 80# white cover in glossy or uncoated finish for a lighter option. Front and back covers are included by default.
Can I order coil or wire binding in a custom color?
Yes. Plastic coil is available in standard black plus a range of custom colors — useful for color-coding multiple document versions or matching brand colors. Wire-o comes in pewter as the standard with additional color options available. Contact us before placing your order to confirm current color availability.
What binding orientations are available?
We offer long-edge binding (portrait — the coil runs along the left side) and short-edge binding (landscape — the coil runs along the top edge). Short-edge binding is common for slide decks, presentation books, and reference materials designed to be read horizontally. Both orientations are available in coil and wire-o.
Is there a minimum order size for spiral or coil binding?
No large minimums. We work comfortably with single copies, small department runs, and orders up to several hundred. If you need a proof copy of a training manual before finalizing the full quantity, that's a normal order for us. Pricing scales with quantity — the more you print, the lower the cost per unit.
